The pharmaceutical industry has made immense advancements in about a century. Earlier medical practitioners used to extract active ingredients from plants to cure illnesses of various types. Over the past century and especially few decades we have seen phenomenal technological developments in terms of machinery and tools.

Understandably there are a number of regulatory norms in place and all pharmaceutical drug manufacturing companies have to abide by them. The innovations we witness simply complements these international drug manufacturing norms.

Process of making tablets from powder has also evolved, thanks to the latest machines such as granulation machines, drying machines, mixing machines and tablets pressing machines to name a few. In this post, we will take a look at the process of making tablets from powder. You must know that medicines are usually available in the form of raw materials, and apparently that’s not the right form to consume. In order to make it consumable by human beings tablets are required to be produced from powder.

There are three crucial elements needed to take into consideration which are:

Evenly mixed binding agent

The binding agent is a crucial element that plays an important role in changing the physical form of the medicine. You need to evenly mix the materials in the recommended ratio. This is critical in order to make sure that ingredients stick together well. You cannot achieve cohesiveness between particles without a binder. The binder can be a wet binder or dry binder depending upon the granulation process.

Use of punches and dies

Determining the size, shape and imprint of the tablet is important before the proportioned powder is compressed into a properly shaped tablet. Punches and dies are used for the purpose. They come in the middle die from two opposite directions and the materials in the middle die are compressed tightly.

Pressure

There are two types of tablet press machines available- manual and automatic. Manual tablet press is obviously human operated while automatic machines are power driven. There is a motor that generates enough power to run the belt and the turbine. Force is transmitted to a spindle through the turbine. This helps facilitate revolving motion of turntable and punches moulds. When the pressure is applied to the punches, the materials are compressed into tablets.

The process of tablet making in the pharmaceutical industry

–         Fill the mixture or granules into the machine

At this stage, the material is fed into the machine. The feeder or hopper system is fed with the material. Once this is done the cam right below the feeder systems lowers the punches and this is where the die gets ready for the compression process.

–         Pre-determined pressure is applied

The compression process has already begun and now the dosing unit will lift the lower punches at a particular height. The upper cam does its bit by lowering the upper punches to make them insert well in the dies. It is important to remove the air while forming the slug. Any air trapped in the material will compromise the entire process. The punches pass to the main compression rollers and pre-programmed force is applied to achieve a compact and solid tablet.

–         Ejection stage

Now we proceed to the ejection stage as the tablets are ready now. The upper cam pulls up the upper punches are lower punches also get back to their initial position as the tablets are ejected.
